The route gains roughly 3,000 feet of elevation, featuring an initial section through coniferous forests and aspen pockets before climbing onto a narrow, exposed ridge. The destination offers panoramic views of the Sneffels Range to the west and the Cimarron Range to the northeast. Access requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle with high clearance to cross Dexter Creek and navigate the final 2.2 miles of rough road to the Upper Horsethief Trailhead. Parking is available at the trailhead. Hikers should plan for about five hours of hiking time and aim to descend by noon to avoid afternoon thunderstorms common at this elevation. Wildlife sightings may include deer, mountain goats, and bighorn sheep.
